I attack the messenger because he makes blanket slurs, which, imo, is wrong. So it is beside the point if, lets say, a racist person is correct or smart on any particular point, he's a racist and I don't care how smart he/she might be. Classifying half of America as stupid doesn't sound smart to me. Think what we could achieve if we didn't slam every person we are in disagreement with as being "retarded" or a "loon."
