Again, I'm not sure, but I think that ethanol was just a name used for a mixture of gasoline, and methane gas

Ethanol is another name for alcohol as in rubbing, whiskey and many other uses, etc. It replaces MBTE(tetra-methyl-ethel-lead-)(you've all heard of the Ethel Corporation?) as a anti knock agent and as a oxidant to promote oxidation of gasoline and reduce pollution It also has 10 to 20% less btu power than gasoline so in effect you get less mileage per gallon and therefore require more gasoline to move the same distance It is also an extreme corrosive and cannot be used in older autos as it ruins the hoses, etc. Newer autos are designed to utilize ethanol without damaging the equipment. The jury is still out on how much pollution it reduces although its use does reduce the lead from the MBTE. Also a good way to get rid of all that corn we subsidize the farmers to grow/or not. Some engines have been developed that will run on pure ethanol or many other substances but they are rather inefficient. All this is layman's description from general reading and some chemistry classes too long ago to matter.
