Looks like about a 90% chance I will end up at Barksdale. I won't know for sure until they pay off the Afganistan war and funnel some money into our military relocation budget but I talked with headquarters last week and they want me there this fall and mid summer would be better in their eyes. I am still trying to get to Missouri though so we'll see.

I checked housing in Shreveport a while back and now and it seems that prices are shooting up fast. What was about 100K to 120K is now 140-170K for what I want. 4 bed, 2000 sq ft, decent neighborhood, 2 car garage etc. Still I noticed price varied greatly depending on what area you were in. Best buys seem to be north in Benton (? , operating from memory) about 30 miles north or so. Next best was Haughton in price.

I have heard from a few people to stay away from middle of city and stay out of the area right around the base.

Heck, I may just stay in base housing but I swore I would never do that again. I like to build things and work on cars so having my own house to tinker in is what I prefer. I only have 4 years left so I hate to buy and then have to sell though since I doubt I will retire there but who knows. I might like it and decide to stay. I had planned on either returning home to St. Louis MO or else coming back here to Boise since jobs are easy to find and the economy is holding up well thus far.

Is it true that sales tax is 8.5% in Shreveport? Yikes!!!! Is it cheaper to jump the state lines and buy large purchases in Texas or Arkansas since the borders are so close?

EDIT - I just checked your profile after writing this and see your in Minnesota so I am a dunce for assuming since you knew that Barksdale was in Shreveport you must have been living there. I am leaving the post though in case someone else lives there can give me some info.

Good Luck,

Lee
