UK wars? Between 400 and 1066, we had various waves of invasion by Saxons, Jutes, Angles, Danes and Vikings. After 1066, we ruled some of France through until 1558 (lost Calais then), at times owning far more than the French did... e.g., Henry II had roughly the same parts of France as Nazi Germany 800 years later. In the 1600's we had the Civil War (French armies over to Scotland), plus James II/William III fighting, plus the Spanish Succession ( I think it was), plus some wars on behalf of Hanover. 1700's saw the 30 Years War, some more anti-French stuff when we got Quebec, and divers colonial battles - not forgetting the bits at the end. Oh, we stopped claiming the French throne in 1802 - I figure because we wanted to put the Irish harp on the flag and didn't have any space left for the lilies, plus it probably would have seemed a little odd given we'd just formally recognised Napoleon.
I didn't go back to Roman times becasue I'm not sure we fought every century... think we had 200 years of peace in there, blasted Romans ruining a perfectly good record, what did they ever do for us anyway ;-) |
