Any links on that, with facts/figures on both sides of the issue?

I'm building some houses this year and next so am personally impacted by the price of lumber.

Also - I was raised in a lumber town that declined as lumber became scarce from over-logging, and became more diverse economically over 30 years. Some of us worked the sawmill in high school, "setting chokers" in the woods, tree-topping and cat-skinning (some of you know what that is). My dad was the town doc & we knew all the timber barons.

The emotion I have on this subject relates to a bastard from Texas using junk bonds to buy out a 130 yr-old family operation called Pacific Lumber to decimate the old-growth thousand-year-old redwoods. The family had spared those and kept sustained-yield of 5%/yr for over a century. Maxxim needed 16% to pay junk bonds to accomplish the theft, clearcutting areas that will no longer be productive for hundreds of years, and trees that will be gone for a thousand years, if then.

Some loggers of the weak-minded sort ate up the propaganda that they'd have more jobs by over-cutting. They now know the truth: they've destroyed their jobs 5 years hence, and will be looking to grow pot or sit on the front porch and whittle and spit.

In Alaska, timber has long been stolen by the Japanese -- there are a lot of such deals that don't get public political scrutiny.
