If A Tree Doesn't Fall In The Forest - Does Anybody Hear?

What this is about goes beyond merely falling trees and rising unemployment,it CUTS to the very fabric of Free Trade itself.

All Free Traders should be wondering right about now whether or not these free trade pacts can stand up under scrutiny, for if one area can become a target, why not all?

There's the rub.Can truly free trade be carried out on a selective basis?I don't think so.To pick and choose undermines the entire concept.

But regarding this particular issue, the problems facing the Canadians is that much of the industry is concentrated in certain areas and the affects on those areas is huge.

They aren't as diversified as they might be or should be and entire smaller towns and regions will be devastated. Also the fact that the industry is a much larger percentage of GNP than most other countries, thus the affects being felt that much more.

Specifically regarding the issue, the Canadian system is very different than the American one.The vast majority of logging is carried out on what is called Crown Land. The disagreement here is what is appropriate to charge as stumpage fees on these lands as opposed to what private land owners charge in the US.

So not only are we entering areas of commerce, but possibly infringing into areas of National Jurisdictions and the make up of the Countries themselves.

Canada will speak softly , but does still carry some trees of notable size <g>

It’s unfortunate an agreement could not be reached…un fortunte for both……. unfortunately
