Eclectus:

It is true the U.S. contributed much to the reconstruction of Europe in the aftermath of WWII.

But don't forget one important factor: The Cold War had started and there was that morbid fear of the communist Soviet Union and the so-called "Red" Hordes elsewhere. So, in helping western Europe, the U.S. was actually protecting its ass, too, whilst at the same time strengthening its political influence abroad. To be sure, the U.S. did not help out of pure altruism: it had its ulterior motives, too. And Europe was an excellent provider of top rank scientists and engineers and manpower in general for the scientific endeavors and industries of the U.S. And with western Europe under its influence, it
apparently felt safer. As the saying goes, "There is safety in numbers."
