RtS, this may be confusing >The book-to-bill is being recorded differently now than it used to be. It is now based on billings only being booked when product is actually shipped.< Here's how I understand it... Bookings are orders minus cancelled orders, according to SEMI. Billings are made after the customer accepts the product. This can sometimes happen after the product is shipped and received by the customer. From the latest Applied Materials 10K Revenue Recognition For all transactions where legal title passes to the customer upon shipment, Applied generally recognizes revenue upon shipment for all products that have been demonstrated to meet product specifications prior to shipment. However, a portion of revenue associated with certain installation-related tasks is recognized when the tasks are completed. For products that have not been demonstrated to meet product specifications prior to shipment, revenue is recognized at customer technical acceptance. For transactions where legal title does not transfer at shipment, revenue is recognized when legal title passes to the customer, which is typically at customer technical acceptance. A provision for the estimated cost of warranty is recorded when revenue is recognized. Prior to fiscal 2001, Applied generally recognized revenue for established products upon shipment. Spares revenue is generally recognized upon shipment. Service revenue is generally recognized ratably over the period of the related contract.
