Next version of Red Hat Linux out as beta:

slashdot.org

Choose to see comments on threshold 4, and you will find that:

- The release is Red Hat Linux 7.2.92 and a beta version
- The next release number can be 7.3 or 8.0 (or something else).
- KDE 3.0 is included, but Gnome 2.0 is not.
- The new Andrea Arcangeli VM will be released by Red Hat Linux for the first time.

Arguments for an 8.0 version number: Red Hat has commented that "The major number is determined by changes in binary compatibility", since gcc 3.0 is the most likely choice for the next Red Hat Linux version and since gcc 3.0 and gcc 2.96RH that is part of Red Hat Linux 7.x, are incompatible.

Arguments for an 7.3 version number: Red Hat focuses more on Gnome than on KDE. KDE has come in version 3.0, but it seems that next version of Red Hat Linux will ship with Gnome 1.4, not Gnome 2.0. I think Red Hat would like Gnome 2.0 to appear before switch to a new major release number.

Personally I believe in the 8.0 because using gcc 2.96RH was an awful decision that Red Hat needs to get rid of.
