Sure, there are risks. AMD has to take risks to compete. And to their credit, they have gotten good at succeeding at that.

AMD must have done some cost-benefit analysis to determine that they can use 2 additional layer and come out ahead overall (including lower yield) with a reasonable confidence level. And is it more than more AMD thinking 'oh_We_are_dead_if_we_dont_take_extreme_risks' ?. This cost-benefit analysis is what I would like to know more about.

Why did they not settle for 8 layers and a slightly larger die size (but higher yields) ?
