This is foolishness. What Israeli extremists are you talking about? Have Israeli extremist groups been running a military campaign while Sharon wrings his hands and cries "I deplore the terrorism", a la Arafat? The Israeli campaign is run by the IDF under a chain of command. The Israeli extremists have been under very tight control. The most extreme Israelis are the Gush Emunim settlers, who have been living in a war zone for 18 months now. Where are the reports of the massacres that these settlers have done in reprisal for their many dead? You don't see them because it hasn't happened.

The problem with "ignoring the extremists" is that the entire Palestinian side is now equally extreme. Arafat is not controlling the terror because Arafat IS the terror. Most of the mass shootings, suicide-bombings, etc. have been carried out by members of the Tanzim and Al Aqsa Brigades, who are on Arafat's direct payroll. There has ceased to be any difference between the PLO and Hamas.

And maybe not. In which case, you have just created a new Palestinian Taliban-like terrorist state on the West Bank. Would you so casually recommend this course if they were going to be five miles away from your house?
