"I can't understand why people don't understand this". I think it has to do with the evolution of society. Certainly this was understood in the days of Genghis Khan. It would solve a lot of problems ( for example, the mid-East would be a lot quieter if the Israelis had killed all the Palestinians and scorched the earth in '48). Basically, it would be genocide, and the world doesn't look upon that with favor any more,thank God. I am not enuf a student of warfare to know when this shift occurred; certainly, there was some scorched earth policies during the Civil War,. However, there has been a gradual shift from kill 'em all to help them out afterwards as we did with Germany and Japan after WW2. TK
