Globe says Nortel deal would bring on many changes The Globe and Mail reports in its Saturday, March 23, edition that CIBC World Markets analyst Steve Kamman says Nortel Networks' move to combine its wireless network equipment operation with Motorola's will spur competitors to follow suit. The Globe's Simon Tuck writes that United States magazine BusinessWeek said last week the telecommunications giants are exploring a variety of options, including the possibility that Nortel's $5.7-billion (U.S.) wireless unit will buy Motorola's wireless division and the combined company would then spin out the new operation as an independent company. If they reach a deal, analysts say other second-tier rivals, such as Siemens, Alcatel and Lucent Technologies, are the most likely to react with new partnerships. Lucent and Alcatel came close last year to merging their companies but pulled away at the last moment. An anonymous analyst says Nortel and Siemens would be a better technological fit. Telefonaktiebolaget LM Ericsson and Nokia are seen as less likely to form new partnerships. An unnamed analyst believes because Nortel and Motorola are big money losers, a combination would only create a bigger problem. |
