I think Alaska is on the planet though isn't it? Aren't there native land issues here as well? Doesn't the US government have a department for the environment called ...oh, what's that name?

The TVX was cyanide issue which isn't nearly as much of an environmental problem as arsenic, lead, mercury and pyrite. Cyanide goes away in a relatively short period of time.

The oxidation of pyrite creates sulfuric acid and it takes a long time to happen. It will kill every fish in the area. Also, the tailings will contain quite a bit of copper which is even worse for fish. But I'm sure there aren't any fish in Alaska to worry about.
