F5 Balances Loads Across ISPs

F5 Networks Inc., a supplier of Internet traffic management products, Monday introduced a product aimed at maximizing availability for sites that have multiple Internet service providers or wide-area network links.
The company's Big-IP Link Controller 2000 lets companies aggregate disparate WAN links including DSL, T1, T3, and so on, into a virtual link. By aggregating, enterprises gain increased flexibility to scale their bandwidth as needed, F5 said. They are also able to reduce or avoid over-provisioning their networks, and they make better use of bandwidth that may otherwise sit idle.
The controller sends incoming requests for data over the fastest available connection. It also performs load balancing so enterprises can direct traffic over their least expensive links. Policy-based features enable an IT organization to define how traffic will be distributed over its available bandwidth.
A feature called Internet Link Evaluator allows the Big-IP Link Controller to supply statistics for evaluating ISP performance.
The BIG-IP Link Controller costs $19,990 for a single device and $37,990 for a redundant pair.
