<What is your basis for saying that you know Nokia missed the GPRS Xmas season on purpose? >

Why would Nokia rush to build a bunch of GSM/GPRS phones when GSM/UMTS is around the corner? I don't think they want to lock in a big part of the replacement market to 2G GPRS technology. Also, they don't want to piss people off with phones that don't work. It would hurt their credibility. Easier to wait around for GSM/UMTS phones.

I think the only reason that GSM wasted their time with GPRS was to avoid any consideration of CDMA in existing GSM spectrum. Now that they have played their last trick with GSM/GPRS stall tactics, they have to come up with dual mode GSM/UMTS phones that work. Then, we can see what 3G companies are going the extra, paired links of UMTS spectrum. More UMTS at 384 kbps or GSM1X? By next year, I think any plans for GSM1X would be referred to by the evolutionary replacement, GSM1X EV DO.
