I remember in the early 90s paying under a buck for a full 8' 2x4. One hurricane and it jumped to $1.98 for the same board. Home prices jumped then too.

Even with the softwood tariff it will be cheaper to buy the same house now than it would have been in 2000 because of the interest rates.
