I think that by unconventional means they did not mean buying stocks (the market in January looked quite strong). At best, it would be what they did in 1987 immediately after the crash, they provided the "big houses" with huge amount of liquidity to go in the market and buy stocks, but then, the danger was that a market crash will lead to an economic crash. It never happened. Furthermore, if I know that we did not have a recession last year, I am sure the feds know that as well.
