>Z, yes but they are not pure terrorists which means they can be co-opted and politicized. Frankly, at this junction, I think the leader of the Hamas would be more effective at getting Palestine to an independent state than Arafat.

Do you know who their leader is? Sheik Ahmed Yassin. He's one of the most anti-western, anti-Israeli people around. He's a blind quadripalegic who gets wheeled to speak at rallies where he calls for the killing of Israeli civilians. The PA supposedly has him under house arrest, under Israel's request, but they let him travel at will.

Wow. I hate to say it, Ted, but you're way off here.

Z, first I said the Hamas may be more effective at getting Palestine to independent statehood. I didn't say they were wonderful people. Besides, I don't think Arafat has the first clue how to build a nation.......I am not very impressed with his credentials.

Secondly, this whole situation is a very bad quagmire. You have to start somewhere so why not start by co-opting the group that is causing you the most trouble. They aren't going away anytime soon and probably it will be cheaper than hunting them down and putting them away for a hundred years.

Besides, they have shown that they are capable of doing something else besides blowing someone up in a Jerusaleum square.
