Dodge ball: Actually, Jeff, I kinda disagree

I personally feel there may be other sports that may be more suited toward building self esteem and learning life's lessons at the same time. Having your classmates surround you then try to knock your block off with a ball can be traumatic for some. I think your kids taekwondo classes would be a better alternative for the mind and body.

I was 5'4" when I was 8. I was very athletic. I could beat almost any kid in any sport, including the boys in my class as I was much bigger. We played dodge ball. I didn't want to hurt the kids by throwing the ball at them. Kids were throwing the ball at the other kids heads. A few got knocked out, saw stars, fell over, bloody noses... I felt real bad for the small, weak and timid kids. I'd aim for the legs and I wouldn't bean them hard at all until one day. This kid that I'd tagged a few times softly took that ball and beaned me in the head. I saw stars and could barely walk to the bench. He laughed his head off. Of course the next time he was up I took that ball and nailed him as hard as I could in the knees, knocked him to the ground where he hit his head and got knocked out with a concussion, was out of school for two weeks. I thought I'd killed him and started crying and apologizing. I would think nowadays with all the liability issues that would be reason enough not to play the game or at least use a beach ball instead and make head shots disqualify you. Maybe the rules have changed since I played as a kid?
