I've read that putting a drug through the federal approval process costs something like $250 million. That's means sales have to be many billions over a 17 year patent life to show a profit.

And cold as it may be, in terms of the overall health of society, it makes sense for them to go after treatments and cures for the 10 most common diseases rather than the 10 rarest.
