Israel had very, very little western support until the mid-60s. Israel could defend itself against the Arab states again. Having said that, it would be much better if they had the support of the west, and when the time comes (which it almost inevitably will), I'd hope the U.S. would stand firmly behind Israel.

Z, Israel has had significant support from the West prior to the 60's; how do you think the formation of a Zionist state got through the UN in the 40's?

However, I don't think the West can continue to provide Israel with such unilateral support going forward. I am not sure how it will play out but I think the Arab/Muslim world will want a more equal footing with the West. I think we are going to be caught between the proverbial rock and a hard place.
