Similarly, a libertarian philosophy sounds good until you realize that people would have no checks (no pun intended) on their behavior.

I'm not advocating anarchy, merely that the GOVERNMENT take a minimalist approach. There would, of course, still be laws against harming other people, including laws that disallow harming others by letting toxic crap from your foundry run onto their property. It's just that the government wouldn't be supporting or babying people or companies or telling them how to live their lives or their businesses as long as they didn't hurt anyone. That's not anarchy.
