There are some technical problems: the classic metal detectors won't find explosives or plastic weapons. Machines which can detect explosives cost millions.

And there are other problems. The people and companies that were there before are still there.

And passengers don't want the waits that tight security can cause with automated detection systems. Neither do the airlines. It kills business. People have already noticed that for trips of, say, under 500 miles, it can be faster to drive than fly. And you don't need to rent a car at the other end.
