Unicom plans to double CDMA network size in 2002

HONG KONG, March 27 (Reuters) - China United Telecommunications Corp, parent of Hong Kong-listed China Unicom Ltd <0762.HK>, said on Wednesday it is sticking with plans to double the capacity of its new CDMA standard cellular network to 30 million users by the end of 2002.

"We have capacity for 15 million now. We will add an additional capacity of 15 million. So by year-end we will have capacity of 30 million, which always has been our plan," Wang Yingpei, chairman of Unicom Horizon Mobile Communications, which is building the network, told Reuters by telephone from Beijing.

"We don't have a target for next year," he added.

China Unicom has said its CDMA network will ultimately have capacity for 50 million users.

In January, Unicom opened the first US$2.9 billion phase of its CDMA network using technology developed by San Diego-based Qualcomm Inc <QCOM.O> -- a project many observers said is risky, given that Unicom already operates a nationwide network using the competing GSM standard.

Consumer adoption of Unicom's CDMA service has been disappointing thus far, partly because of scarce handsets, and Hong Kong-listed Unicom recently revealed that only 9,000 new CDMA users were added in February in the provinces in which it operates.
