China Unicom does not see losses from CDMA network services this yr

HONG KONG (AFX-ASIA) - China Unicom Ltd president and executive director Wang Jianzhou said he does not expect the company to incur losses from its CDMA network services in 2002.
He, however, did not elaborate.
Earlier, China Unicom reported a 2001 net profit of 4.457 bln yuan, up from 3.234 bln yuan a year earlier, while sales rose to 29.393 bln yuan from 23.692 bln.
Speaking to reporters after releasing the company's 2001 results, Wang Jianzhou said the group has no plans to change its target of reaching 7.0 mln CDMA subscribers this year.
"Our target for the group as a whole is to reach 7.0 mln subscribers this year for our CDMA services, of which two-thirds will be coming from our listed entity," he said.
He said he is not worried that the company will not achieve the target.
During March 1-26, new subscribers for the listed entity's CDMA services stood at over 62,000, he said.
As of end-February, China Unicom had 448,000 subscribers for its CDMA network, up from 439,000 subscribers at the end of January.
Meanwhile, chairman Yang Xianzu said China Unicom made a provision of 630 mln yuan for its paging operations in 2001.
"The provision was made as a result of a migration of customers from the paging services, coupled with an uncertain outlook for the division," he said.
He added that the company will consider making further provisions for its paging services this year.
