Mail-order catalog biz taps EBay

SAN JOSE, Calif. (CBS.MW) -- EBay is expanding its breadth of merchandise as it partners with Altura International, an aggregator of mail order and online catalog merchants.

EBay (EBAY: news, chart, profile) announced on Wednesday that Altura will list products from about 50 merchant partners, including Alsto's, DiscoveryStore.com, San Francisco Music Box and Hello Direct, on EBay's marketplace.

Privately held Altura will then bring winning bidders to complete the transactions on CatalogCity.com, the company's flagship shopping portal.

"This means our merchants can turn inventory that might normally yield only a few cents on the dollar from a liquidator into a profit center by using EBay as an additional sales distribution channel," said Lee Lorenzen, president and CEO of Altura International.

Altura, which is partially funded by Bill Gates, Yahoo (YHOO: news, chart, profile), InfoSpace (INSP: news, chart, profile), and Amazon.com (AMZN: news, chart, profile), plans to provide the new service to all its partners by the end of this year.
