OK, I finally went ahead and bought some LEAP puts on FNM.

The stock seems to have enjoyed a 1600% or so gain since the great bull market began in 1982, and a pullback to 40 would still put it 800% ahead in those twenty years--a better than 10% compounded growth.

But any option purchase is a gamble.
