MSI, I thought you'd mentioned 17% as the amount by which Californians reduced their usage of power last year. I, too heard that from a number of Californians. This article says they reduced power consumption by a 14%, still phenomenal. As a repositioned Californian who had been through two droughts and two gas crunches, I know just how well we did with conserving. There are no people on earth who pull together so well to do whatever it takes to make things work. They certainly did not deserve the energy crisis foisted upon them. The article:

Californians conserve electricity during peak hours

Californians used 8.9 percent less electricity during peak hours in the year 2001 when compared to 2000's electricity use and when adjusted for growth and weather, according to numbers released Thursday by the California Energy Commission.



"Californians are doing a remarkable job conserving. Their efforts are making a critical difference in meeting our energy challenge," Gov. Gray Davis said. "Conservation, along with bringing new power plants on line, continues to be the cornerstone of California's energy policy."

Overall energy use also declined in 2001, with adjusted savings of 6.7 percent.

During the month of December, adjusted numbers just released show that Californians reduced their electricity use during peak hours by 2.3 percent, even when using holiday lighting. Overall adjusted energy use for the month was down by 4.4 percent.

Californians averaged a 10 percent cut in their electricity use during peak hours this summer and reached a record reduction of 14 percent in June 2001. Summer 2001 was the 25th warmest summer in over a century.
