but if tariffs are self-inflicting, why would any nation want to cause harm to itself by retaliating? you are after all advocating the practice of unilateral free trade, where even if countries take protectionist measures against us, we should not escalate matters by responding in kind. so i assume you advocate practicing unilateral free trade like britain did, shortly before its empire collapsed. america put up high protective tariffs at the end of the civil war, and britain practiced unilateral free trade. who do you think made out better?
