| New Praxair carbon dioxide facility goes on stream in Saint John, New Brunswick
DANBURY, Conn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 8, 1997--Praxair, Inc. (NYSE:PX), the world's largest supplier of carbon dioxide, today announced the start-up of a new, 450 metric tons (495 tons) per day facility in Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada, to supply seafood processors and other carbon dioxide users in the Maritime provinces and New England states.

The new plant recovers and purifies carbon dioxide (CO2) produced as a by-product of the refining process at the nearby Irving Oil Limited refinery. Working with Irving Oil, Praxair recycles CO2 that was previously released to the atmosphere.

Carbon dioxide is used to carbonate beverages and to chill, freeze and package seafood, meat, poultry, baked goods, fruits and vegetables, and dairy products to improve product quality, eliminate preservatives, and extend shelf life. It is an important environmental component in industrial waste and process water treatment as a replacement for sulfuric acid to control pH levels. Other uses include drinking water treatment, welding, purging pipelines and storage containers of flammable liquids or vapors, and blanketing hazardous materials for safe storage or transfer.

Irving Oil Limited operates Canada's largest refinery and supplies petroleum products throughout eastern Canada and the northeastern United States.

Praxair is the largest industrial gases company in North and South America, and one of the largest worldwide, with 1996 sales of $4.4 billion.
