You know about popsicle-stick economics, right? Parents on a block get together and issue one another popsicle sticks good for a night of babysitting. Besides being a canonical analogy for money supply, these things actually can work.

Dividing M3 by total gold is something like dividing popsicle parents' net worth by the number of sticks. It's fun, but tells you nothing.
