As was said about Pat Buchanan before the 1996 Republican convention-and applies equally to John McCain, "He lost. This isn't a golf tournament."

McCain in 2000 proved only that his support among Republicans reaches-at its fever pitch-barely 1/3 of the Republican voters. He also showed that many anti-Bush Democrats enjoyed crossing over in the primaries from their own boring race to "take a shot" at the hated Bush by voting for McCain. Why a state party, trying to determine which candidate they will support at their party convention, wants to invite the enemy to force them into their choice, is one of the questions in our complicated politics. It's indicative of the perverted idea that "participation" somehow leads to better government. Increased QUALITY, not QUANTITY, of the voters accomplishes that, and we will have unsatisfying government until we realize that once again...
