The market will never come around to your perception because there are too many investors who believe that it is not only sane but smart to plunk down at least a portion of their cash on investments which carry with them both substantial risk and the possibility of substantial returns.

i think you didn't understand what i was saying, because my point is an obvious one. the equity risk premium has varied throughout history but regresses to its historical norm. there is no reason to think this won't happen again.

as i said, it's important to identify potential reward to go along with risks. imho too many people simply equate volatility with high potential reward. this is why trading volumes are still very high and why so many beta parkers are crowded into Nasdaq stocks.

but volatility in and of itself is no measure of long term expected return. expected return can only be derived from fundamental value.
