Over the past few centuries, the major stock markets have moved upward most of the time, making new highs every few decades. Also, the P/E is generally in the range of 5 to 20.

So in the long term (years), earnings have a strong influence on the market.

For hour to hour, day to day, or week to week, the market doesn't correlate well with anything. Go test a few daytrading systems... you will find roughly equal win/loss probabilities excluding commissions.
