The problem is that there is no contextual analysis. Among Americans generally, there may be dubious attitudes towards the irreligious. In the circles in which most of the 14% move, that is, among the college educated and professionally advanced, believers are frequently on the defensive. I have gone to parties where no one thought twice about expressing sheer derision for religious beliefs, as if it were inherently amusing to treat them sarcastically, even without making an effort to be clever.
