Your analysis is on target. Bush, to his credit, realizes that for the Republican Party to survive as a major player in American politics a few decades down the road, it will have to expand its base, and the Hispanic community is the obvious target. However, as you point out, Bush only captured 1/3 of the Hispanic vote 16 months ago.

Bush may win a second term as president, but I'm not sure he's going to be able to hold together the fragile right-wing coalition he skillfully assembled to win the presidency.

Also, it's just a matter of time before other Western states enter the Democratic column as New Mexico did on Election Night 2000. Hispanics have very little reason to vote Republican, and those on this board who argue that such will occur as more Hispanics enter the middle class are all wet. It ain't happening.
