If a person won't vote for a candidate just because he shows compassion.....they are not very politically savvy. Many Americans will not vote for conservatives because they see them as cold-blooded, unemotional, robots who are only interested in balancing the budget....period. They see them as heartless, with no concern for less fortunate citizens. The more conservatives live up to that stereotype, the fewer votes they garner. Government that lacks compassion for the truly needy neglects an important part of its prime directive. G.W.'s point was that his administration would run a tight fiscal ship with compassion.....those are the qualities of an effective government. History took the tight fiscal ship agenda out of his hands......there are more important long-range plans to attend to right now.
