In September, the Army signed a $665 million contract with UDI (United Defense Industries), a Carlye
Group-controlled contractor. In January, Bush signed a defense appropriations bill that included $487
million for the 'Crusader Advanced Field Artillery System'. A Pentagon advisory panel had recommended
canceling the Crusader, and rejected the Crusader program back in '97 by the National Defense Panel as
being "inappropriate for modern warfare".
The Carlyle Group, of course, has close ties to Bush, which probably explains why he's willing to pour
millions of dollars into a system which has been rejected in the past.
