MSFT wasn't even in the same playing field during the RDBMS years of high growth (mid 80's through about 1989/90. IT was ORCL, Ingres and IFMX. SYBS came to the party late, did surprisingly well with a good marketing message, and Ingres stumbled badly. Unify was there in the beginning, but blew it big time.
