the idea of a move is terribly stressful

Oh, goodness, yes. I'm usually a good planner and organizer, but I cringe at this one. Since I don't know where I'm going or how long it will take me to get there, I will have the movers store my stuff. Which means that I need to sort out what to store, what to take with, what to throw out. And I need to get my place painted, which will require scaffolding and the moving of some really big pieces of furniture, which will have to be emptied to move. So do I pack that stuff permanently for the move when I'm only painting? And, if I can do without this of that for maybe a year or two until I have a new home, do I really need to have it at all?

I had originally planned to just leave all my stuff here. I've been here 27 years and the place costs me next to nothing to keep. But home sales in my neighborhood are really hot and prices have nearly doubled since I made that plan. The cost of just using it to store my furniture for a year or two while I wander around looking for a new location now seems too high.

I've been intending to make the move since I retired, which was a year ago. I do a little work, get overwhelmed with the prospect of sorting things out given the uncertainty, and crash in front of my computer or TV. The realtor will call me and bug me again in a week. Perhaps she will judge me, instead, on how many messages I've posted on SI rather than the size of the pile of trash on the curb or my deposits at the Salvation Army.
