>> AT&T Will Spend $5 Billion On Network Upgrades In 2002

Puget Sound Business Journal
Mar 29, 2002

AT&T Wireless Services Inc. of Redmond plans capital expenditures of approximately $5 billion during 2002 as it continues upgrading its network to so-called 2.5G technology.

The company said that as of Dec. 31 it offered the relatively high-speed GSM/GPRS services, generally known as 2.5G, in 27 cities in 14 states. This year it expects to complete the rollout of those data services across its network, which covers 45 percent of the U.S. population, the company said in its annual 10-K report to the Securities and Exchange Commission.

Last year AT&T Wireless also spent about $5 billion on capital improvements, but only 20 percent of those expenditures went to the GSM/GPRS network. This year an estimated two-thirds of its capital spending will go towards the advanced network. <<
