But I would bet that they would show that the 14% group of professed atheists and agnostics are heavily skewed to the more educated and (presumably) more intelligent. I would guess that among university faculty, for example, the ratio would would be much higher than 14 percent.

I think peer pressure and PC are part of the explanation. I believe that psychology provides an equally important explanation. Highly intelligent people tend to have very strong ego drives. Belief in a deity requires submission of the ego to the concept a higher being. That is about as simple as it gets.
