Hard drive problem - a Dell Dimension 4100 with WinME, no new programs or setup changes recently, suddenly began to grind away on the hard drive after a reboot. The HD activity barely allows any other program to run.

When Scandisk runs, it gets to 24% complete in the Directory Structure section and sticks there, with the HD grinding away in a 3-4 pulse rhythm.

Any guesses if this is a hardware problem (failing HD) or a software glitch?
