Perhaps the more education you have, the more open minded you become, because you have been exposed to so many competing ideas, and the more secular this makes you. People with advanced degrees tend to be less religious, if I recall the statistics. It simply has to damage an absolutist view of the world for many people, when they are exposed to the breadth of religions that have been, and that are. The diversity is astounding. I know college geology class coupled with broad reading killed my mother's faith. I'm sure she is not unique. The more you know about the beliefs of other people, the more doubtful it becomes that any of them are "right". The hubris, imo, is in picking one thing to believe, and then believing it so absolutely that you are willing to hurt other people over your belief. And Dithers thinks atheists and agnostics have big egos? Imagine believing that you can find the "correct" religion out of the virtual cornucopia of religions available. Imagine believing that so strongly that you are willing to condemn other men and women for not believing the way you do (even if you pretend it is your religion which is doing the condemning)
