But then, why not just call it the right? The use of the term "religious right" necessarily targets the religious beliefs of people, and is almost always used in a pejorative sense.

I think it's quite surprising that people can see the offense in putting a Noel sign on a building, but can't see the offense in using the term "religious" in a derogatory sense.
