Yes, it's been about 15 years since I read it...but I seem to remember typical Russian depression dialog where the family had burned the furniture and was deciding whether or not to chop down some of the cherry trees for fire-wood, which would of course diminish their ability to earn money the next year to buy fuel, so they would have to burn more trees...and down the spiral went.

I leave it to you to pursue the analogy with Wendt and Co.
