I believe the Palestinians take the lion's share of the blame for the failure.

When there is an unfaithful spouse in a marriage, does the blame fall on the faithful one or his/her best buddy?

You're right that Israel is surrounded. It has been for 53 years. If anything though, the success of its negotiations with some other Arab states may make it less surrounded than before.

As noted by Hawk, if it comes to war the only compelling motive/principle is to win. I do not see much chance that any but Israel can accomplish exactly that.

Consider that this will be the first war Israel has fought without its opposition being heavily supplied by the Soviets, too.

But I could be wrong. That hero Osama Bin-Superman could fly to the rescue and save the day for the Palestinians....
