As Dr. J. has noted, EDGE may get 240 kbps except for the fact that the modulation is less in scope than GSM's so you either flood the area with basestations and towers or you accept even lower speeds. According to Dr. J. EDGE is susceptible to interference so unless that problem is solved then frequency re-use is questionable. All leading to lower speeds.

Surely explains why there are no big pushes in Europe to EDGE. Chicken Little can fool them once, but he can't fool them twice.
