But the real question is: why exercise now? Why not wait for gold to go up more, then exercise? There's no tax liability until you exercise - so why do it now? The only reasons to exercise now are: 1) The options are expiring soon. 2) You want to hold the common for a long term cap gain. 3) You want/need the money now. 4) You think gold is at the top.
